UW-Platteville enters new international collaboration
UW-Platteville is beginning a new collaboration in the civil engineering program with Zhengzhou University (ZZU) in China. The Chinese government recently issued approval for ZZU to start a collaborative undergraduate program in civil engineering that would allow its students to either transfer to UW-Platteville to complete a civil engineering degree or enroll in courses at Zhengzhou University, taught by UW-Platteville civil engineering faculty.
Officials from both institutions met at UW-Platteville on Aug. 16 to start discussions about establishing course equivalencies in order to make the transfer process efficient.
“The collaborative undergraduate project in civil engineering with ZZU is a win-win,” said Donna Anderson, director of International Programs at UW-Platteville. “ZZU is located in Henan Province, the most populated province in China. Approximately 1 million students graduate from high schools in Henan Province each year and there are not enough universities or university seats to accommodate them. By offering programs like the civil engineering program delivered jointly with UW-Platteville in their International College, ZZU is able to enroll and serve more students from the province.”
Anderson said the collaboration brings many benefits to UW-Platteville as well. “The agreement helps UW-Platteville increase its degree-seeking student population from China, provide a steady stream of transfer students from a single institution, and internationalize the campus,” she said.
Zhengzhou University, located in Zhengzhou City, Henan Province, has an enrollment of more than 72,600 undergraduates including 1,600 international students from more than 60 countries.
UW-Platteville vice chancellor added to Board of Regents workgroup
Rose Smyrski, University of Wisconsin-Platteville’s vice chancellor, was selected to serve on the Board of Regents’ administrative hiring workgroup. This workgroup was created to explore streamlining the hiring process for System and institutional leadership. The group will also consider options to increase the number of applicants from non-academic backgrounds, John Robert Behling, UW System Board of Regents president, said.
“We have a wonderful group of chancellors and system leaders,” President Behling said. “As the responsibilities of university leaders continue to evolve, universities across the country have benefited from being open to hiring individuals from non-academic backgrounds, including the private sector and government. The Board of Regents needs to make sure that our hiring process allows for a diverse pool of candidates that reflect the changing dynamics of higher education.”
The administrative hiring workgroup is charged with reviewing the current process by which university chancellors, provosts, vice chancellors and System presidents and vice presidents are hired. As part of the process, the group will review hiring practices in other states and examples of non-academic executive level hires at other universities.
Regent Vice President Drew Petersen will chair the workgroup, which includes Regent vice-chair, Gerald Whitburn; Regent Tracey Klein; UW-Stout Chancellor, Bob Meyer; UW-Extension Provost, Aaron Brower; UW-La Crosse professor, Joe Heim; UW System vice president of Academic and Student Affairs, James Henderson; UW System senior associate vice president of Human Resources and Workforce Diversity, Shenita Brokenburr; and Smyrski.
“We want to ensure the UW System’s search process produces the best candidates, and does so in an efficient and effective manner,” Petersen said. “This will help the UW System compete for the best leaders, both in and out of academia. Our students, faculty and taxpayers deserve no less.”
The workgroup is expected to provide its recommendations to Board of Regents President Behling later this fall.
