enrolling in student support services

In order to become a participant in Student Support Services (SSS) a student must meet at least one of the eligibility requirements, sign up before the program is full, schedule and complete an intake appointment, and agree to a contract to participate for the remainder of the academic year. Once a student is enrolled in SSS, they can request a tutor.

requesting a tutor

A student who is enrolled in SSS may request a tutor by going to our main office, Warner 105, and completing a schedule of availability/tutor request form and a tutoring contract. Then the student will bring the forms in to the tutor coordinator in Warner 112 and officially request the tutor. The tutor coordinator will cross reference the student's schedule of availability with the availability of a tutor for that course. Once a matching time is found, the tutor coordinator will schedule the tutoring session for that time with that tutor in a room in Warner Hall for the remainder of the semester, or as long as the student desires tutoring. All SSS tutoring takes place between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. If a tutor for a certain course is not available, the tutor coordinator will document the request and attempt to fill it by obtaining a tutor for that course as soon as possible.

what courses can be tutored?

SSS attempts to offer tutoring in every course on campus; however, some courses are easier to find tutors for than other courses. In reality, SSS can offer tutors in nearly all 1000 and 2000 level courses and many 3000 and 4000 level courses. In the event SSS does not have a tutor for a course in which a student would like tutoring, the tutor coordinator will attempt to obtain a tutor as quickly as possible. Thus, SSS participants are advised to always inquire about a tutor for their course so that SSS is made aware of the request and can make an effort to obtain a tutor.

attendance policy

Out of respect for the tutors and a belief that fully committing to tutoring is in the best interest of a student who has requested a tutor, SSS has a strict attendance policy. Participants are allowed three absences from scheduled sessions per course per semester. After the third absence, we reserve the right to discontinue services. Make-up sessions can be scheduled to eliminate any absence. If a student does accumulate three or more absences, the tutor coordinator will work with them to determine if tutoring is still desired and, if so, how the student will better commit to the tutoring so that it can continue.
